Hike The Most Scenic Route To The Summit Of Africa's Highest Peak.
Kilimanjaro Climbing is something atop the list of many travelers’ bucket lists. Each year, the iconic mountain attracts thousands who spend days attempting to reach her snowy summit. The kind who wants a challenge, who wants to push themselves, to test themselves. But before taking the summit, you need to go through the Kilimanjaro Climbing Guide!
Kilimanjaro Climbing has become more tourist-friendly over the years but it’s a serious challenge. Normally 55%–70% of people who start the hike make it to the top.
However, with a little planning and preparation, you can greatly increase your chances of reaching “the Roof of Africa.” Get the best Kilimanjaro Climbing Guide, here’s everything you need to know to make the most :
Aimed at climbers who want to reach the height of 5000m or more and get the huge achievement by stepping up at the top of Africa.
Climbing Africa's tallest mountain is a once in a lifetime journey that will change the way you look at yourself and the world forever. Taking on this Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing challenge with other adventurous travellers from around the world makes this hike even more meaningful and special!
Climbing this 5,895 metre high volcano feels a little like a tour of the world’s climatic zones. As you enter the park, lush montane forests, inhabited by elephants, primates, buffalo and more lead to tropical forest (1,850 – 2,800 metres), where clouds cling for their lives to the trees, making a wet and misty atmosphere. As we climb higher, reaching around 3,200 metres, we reach a moorland zone, a strange primate atmosphere filled with giant heather and studded with giant lobalias. Above 4,000 metres we see yet another dramatic change, a surreal alpine desert that struggles to support any life at all, with intense weather conditions and loose sand. This is the final push before we reach the winter wonderland that encompasses the Kilimanjaro Summit.
The Kilimanjaro Treks team aren’t just record-breaking mountaineers, they’re hugely experienced mountain guide & rescuers, with extensive training in high-altitude recovery techniques. This, combined with our intimate knowledge of the mountain, means you’ll be in the safest possible hands when taking on this tricky, technical climb.
This is often one of the first questions we get asked. Happily, the answer is that you can Climb Kilimanjaro every single day of the year! However, in spite of the fact that if it ain't raining, it ain't training, a lot of people don't like getting heavily rained on when trying to enjoy some of the planet's most breath-taking views.
To cater for those who want to stay reasonably dry, we therefore recommend climbing during the dryer months - January to February, and June to October.
However, there are some important weather-related considerations and other factors that affect our recommendation, such as route selection and crowding.
Here you can find a list of everything you could possibly need on the mountain. We will share things you will need for particular climate zones on the mountain. We highly recommend separating your pack by climate zone, rather than by similar items. See the video below for a detailed guide on how to pack your bag!
When we recommend that you book your climb at least 3 months in advance and commit to our 12 Week Training Plan, we don't want you to think that climbing Kilimanjaro is only possible for super-fit people. That's definitely not the case and over the years we've assisted many people to the summit who would admit they were in bad shape and didn't find time to train.
The main reason we want our climbers to train is simply because they'll enjoy the experience so much more and remain far more alert to the incredible natural beauty around them.
It is essential that people attempting to climb have Kilimanjaro Travel Insurance that covers the climb. Kilimanjaro Treks is not able to refund trip deposits and balances can only be partially refunded. Bearing this in mind, it only makes sense to ensure your travel insurance covers trip cancellation, delays, or unforeseen expenses.
Kilimanjaro Travel Insurance covers trip cancellation, missed connections, delays, baggage loss or delay, hurricanes, terrorism, pre-existing medical conditions, unemployment, medical emergencies, and a number of other things. However, high altitude climbing is usually not covered as standard. You may need to request additional coverage for mountaineering or mountain climbing.
Depending on your group size, support level (and some very special extras), the cost to climb ranges from USD 2000 to USD 5000 per person! However, the vast majority of those booking to climb with us pay between USD 2,243 and USD 3,169 per person.
But apart from the actual price of the climb which only covers your costs within Tanzania, there are additional costs that you'll need to be aware of...
Safety is our number one priority. Our Guides are the best on the mountain. Each Guide is certified and has 100+ Kilimanjaro Climb. Our crew is prepared in every way, and are here to ensure that your climb is safe on Kilimanjaro.
Our guides are trained in how to detect, monitor and handle acute mountain sickness (AMS). Guides are formally trained in first aid, and carry all necessary medical equipment such as: Oxygen level monitors, Extra oxygen tanks, Medical charts
We react promptly and safely on any sign that you've become afflicted with acute mountain sickness.
It takes a lot of effort to climb to the Roof of Africa. To do so safely and successfully, we provide you a crew of 7 on the mountain (Lead Mountain Guide, Assistant Mountain Guide, Waiter, Cook, and Porters). Having a large and supportive staff helps ensure your safety on the mountain.
There is no doubt Kilimanjaro is a popular mountain, rare is the moment you have to yourself. Kilimanjaro Camps are vast sprawling affairs and as you lay in your tent the murmur of voices coming from every language around is strangely soothing if not quite the mountain wilderness many of us crave.
On most routes (baring Marangu) you will sleep in a modern well-sized dome tent, typically 2 people sharing a three / four person tent. In addition your group will have a toilet tent with a simple thunder box toilet and a mess tent where meals are served.
Supplying your body with continuous calories is an important factor in successfully Climbing Kilimanjaro. While an average person on a typical work day burns around 2,500 calories, a hiker on Kilimanjaro can burn 6,000 to 8,000 calories a day! In order to keep well fuelled, you have to eat.
Our chefs will serve large, healthy Kilimanjaro Food to keep you happy and well-fed on your Kilimanjaro Climb. You’ll have hot meals at breakfast and dinner, freshly prepared with locally-sourced ingredients. We prepare all our food to strict hygiene standards, ensuring it’s delicious and safe to eat. Our menus are designed to be nutritionally-dense, with plenty of variety to cater to the energy demands of the trek.
High altitude trekking comes with obvious risks.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) (aka altitude sickness or altitude illness) and its severe variants, High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) and High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), are your biggest concerns on Mount Kilimanjaro.
The greatest challenge travellers face when Climbing Kilimanjaro is altitude sickness, which causes a third of climbers to turn back. While Kilimanjaro is a non-technical climb, the extreme altitude, low temperatures and occasional fierce winds mean all hikers must be physically fit, properly equipped and well acclimatised. The single biggest success factor on any Kilimanjaro Trek is allowing yourself ample time to adjust to the elevation. All routes have rangers and rescue facilities to assist those affected by Kilimanjaro Altitude Sickness.
In the rare case when a climber gets ill or seriously injured on Mount Kilimanjaro, a helicopter evacuation may be required.
The cost of medical evacuation from the mountain is expensive, which is why the right travel insurance is mandatory for all climbers. When purchasing your insurance, be sure that the policy covers emergency evacuation up to 6,000 meters above sea level and any associated medical treatment.
We put your safety as our number one priority, read more about Kilimanjaro altitude sickness in our in-depth guide.
For many, Climbing Kilimanjaro is the experience of a lifetime.
It’s also a fairly big investment and you, therefore, need to understand your chances of actually reaching the summit and which routes give you the best chance at doing that.
In addition to paying the company you book with, you will also need to tip your team of porters. Porters to carry your gear, a cook, someone to carry (and clean) the toilet, a waiter/assistant cook, our main guide, and then our assistant guide. It takes a lot to get to the summit; you aren’t doing this alone after all!
You’ll be tipping a specific amount per day to each porter, a bit more to the cook, and then a bit more to the guides. Breakdowns usually look something like this:
Camping conditions are austere and the thin air causes altitude sickness. Kilimanjaro also hurls some atrocious weather your way, so what’s the appeal? In just a few days trekkers climb from the equator and into arctic conditions: through tropical rainforest, Alpine meadows, moorland, desert uplands, to snow and ice. You can trace the grand process of evolution in reverse: from the animals of the forest to the first stirrings of bacterial life on the summit.
The mountain inspires a good level of physical and mental strength, but Climbing Kilimanjaro can benefit the Tanzanian people, as well as yourself. The people are courteous, helpful and incredibly friendly and Kilimanjaro is an integral part of their tourism industry, creating jobs, and generating much needed foreign revenue.

Here's What Some Of Our Awesome Customers Had To Say
We did a two weeks tour in Tanzania with safari and other activities like hikes, beach, boat trips...
We had planned the trip in advance with Gecko Adventure to find our personal best route and accommodations. They were very prompt, kompetent and helpful. We got the tour for a very fair price.
Our guide and driver Rama picked us up in Dar es Salaam and drove us all the way to Kilimanjaro. He did a great job, did everything to make us happy. He knows a lot about the animal and how to find them.
It was a wonderful experience with many highlights. The accommodations were very good, each with its special, personal flair and excellent food. The staff was extremely nice.
Gecko Adventure also organized a PCR test for us. We got the result exactly as planned.
We can only recommend Tanzania in these difficult times. It is like a paradise.
We can also only recommend Gecko Adventure. If we come back to Tanzania, we will book with them again.

Rama the owner is a very smooth communicator, and it’s easy to be very impressed with his handling of your booking and answering your questions, etc. But despite trusting him a lot, he completely scammed us.
Our first clue that something was amiss was when we tried to find the office that Rama claims to have. He told us specially what building his office was in (it’s also marked on Google maps in this prestigious location). The office does not exist.
Once we realized this, we asked to see the car that was “being repaired” as part of his story. This was the night before we were to leave on our trip. During the trip to see the car (which was honestly bring repaired as described, but based on its condition did not appear ready for departure the next day) we talked casually to him about our trip and how excited we were (that it was our honeymoon).
One hour after he returned us to our hotel, he sent a group WhatsApp text including an unknown person saying that his “business partner” (really just one of his drivers posing as his “partner”) was unsatisfied with the price Rama has agreed to and that the trip (which was to start the next day) would be 3x more expensive!! When I protested that we had agreed to a price weeks ago (Rama had gone so far as to specify what kind of USD bills to bring and I had sent him a picture of the bills laid out on a table), they refused to even acknowledge the deal they had agreed to. It was clear that they decided to take advantage of the information we had given them — that we were on our honeymoon- to try to extort us for 3x the price. How messed up is that?! The trip is now ruined and Rama has been increasingly dishonest in trying to justify this 3x price increase (we’re talking about thousands of dollars). It’s actually been quite embarrassing as Rama has repeatedly made new claims and I just keep responding with a screenshot of previous messages he sent contradicting his new lies. Avoid at all costs!!!

Very professional from start till the end!
All was planned and structured as we wanted it. We were part of the process from the start and they were also able to adapt to our wishes along the way.
The safari driver was excellent with huge knowledge about nature and animals and you could clearly feel his passion for the work he is doing and his respect towards the animals and nature.
This was not my first time on safari, but definitely one of the best ones

Everything was planned to the smallest detail. Nothing to worry about 👌 Would definitely recommend booking whatever through Kilimanjaro Trek Tanzania!
I don't have enough words to say how wonderful it was. Rama was incredible, quick with answers and willing to please our wishes. Our guide, called Rama too, was very pleasant, we learned a lot with him and we could really see that he made his best for us.

The trip was organized perfectly. Rama was always responsive and understanding of last minute tweaks to the itinerary, ensuring that we had the correct information every step of the way. I was very confident that the trip was going to go well before it started largely in part due to Rama's customer service leading up to it.
I couldn't be happier that we chose Kilimanjaro Trek for our safari, and highly recommend it!
